I don’t like you all the time, Mommy:

    I need some help!:

Half-naked Asian man dancing-odd, strange, and oddly funny (watch at your own risk!):

And on the cool front, check out this trailer for the upcoming movie, Alice in Wonderland. I can’t wait to see it!

I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve and I’ll see you on Monday!

    Don’t Forget!

This week, The Novel Girls are talking about what we’re looking forward to in 2010.

Next week begins my M/W/F posting schedule. I *might* post on other days when the mood fits, but there should (fingers crossed) always be something up on M/W/F. That’s my goal for the next year, anyway!

    Twas the Night Before Christmas

    by Clement Clarke Moore

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

    Wishing you a very…

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Cookies, Pies, and Other Assorted Goodies

    Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

We’ve been baking for the last three days, pretty much straight. My daughter took control of the kitchen Sunday and Monday (because she insisted on baking far more cookies than we actually needed. But it’s Christmas, and we have guests coming, so why not?), and I had the kitchen on Tuesday. Today, we’re frosting the last batch of sugar cookies from yesterday, and I’ll be prepping whatever I can for tomorrow’s dinner.

My older son is making Christmas Day dinner. All by himself. See, normally we have our big dinner on Christmas Day, but this year I changed things and invited folks over for Christmas Eve. I decided I’d prefer to have Christmas Day to relax (in my jammies if I wanted!), and with all the leftovers from the day before, no one would go hungry.

Son hated this idea. So I told him “Hey, if you want to cook Christmas dinner, more power to you.” To which he said, “Yeah. I think I will.” So he is.

It is sure to be interesting! I’m also looking forward to it, though. In fact, I’m pretty sure he’ll do a great job and maybe I can pass off all the holiday cooking to him from here on out. I’m rubbing my hands in glee at the very thought!

This is it for me this week. Have a wonderful (and safe) Christmas, and I’ll be back on Monday.

    My Children’s Christmas Lists

    Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

My younger two children, the twin seven-year-old boys have some odd things on their Christmas list. Or, at least, I found them odd (and slightly humorous).

Here is a partial sampling from their lists:

    1. A Snuggi (Isn’t this cute? They want a Snuggi!)
    2. A Robe (Yes, a robe.)
    3. A Snow Globe
    4. A Nutcracker
    5. Springy Shoes that Bounce (Still do not know what these are)
    6. Blue Pajamas
    7. Picture Frames

Well, they also asked for a Wii and Wii games, a few books, and that was about it. When my teenagers were that age, their lists were pages and pages long. This year…my daughter (who is 19) gave me a lovely full list, with links, even. My older son (who is 17), said, “You know the sorts of things I like. Weird stuff. Unusual things. Surprise me.”

I found I had a LOT more fun shopping for him, but there’s also more worry while I wonder if he’ll like any of the “weird” (not that weird) and “unusual” (okay, some of it is rather unusual) stuff I chose.

If you have children, were you surprised by their Christmas lists this year? If you don’t have kids, is there anything from your childhood Christmas lists that you asked for that was out of the ordinary?

    Don’t Forget!

The Novel Girls are celebrating more than Christmas this week! We’re also celebrating the release of DARKLIGHT by Lesley Livingston! Come on over!

    Monday Humor — Christmas Style

    Monday, December 21st, 2009

Seeing as I spent the weekend food shopping, last minute shopping (yeah, and I’d thought I was done!), cleaning, writing, crafting, baking, and wrapping, I’m a little tired this morning.

    Okay, lots tired.

And I’m not done. There is more planning, baking, cleaning, and wrapping to be had. Not much, but enough. So because I’m so tired, I’m going to be quick today.

Mostly, I’m just going to share a few things that have made me laugh. I hope they make you laugh, too!

First, here is a video I first saw on Agent Kristin Nelson’s blog, Pub Rants:

John Scalzi’s blog, Whatever, pointed me in the direction of Paul and Storm. Christmas music. Original. Funny. And totally worth listening to. They’re putting a new song up every few days (at least until Christmas), so be sure to check back. Oh, and you can listen to last year’s music by clicking on their sidebar.

And now, if you feel like singing, go to the Muderati blog and read Toni McGee Causey’s author rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas. It’s awesome.

    Don’t Forget!

This week at The Novel Girls, we’re celebrating Lesley Livingston’s newest release, DARKLIGHT. This is a book I’ve been waiting to read for a long while.

Favorite Christmas Shows for Kids (Chosen by My Kids!)

    Friday, December 18th, 2009

So, I asked my younger set (7-year-old boys) what their favorite Christmas shows and/or movies are. Here’s what they came back with:

    1. Frosty the Snowman
    2. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
    3. A Miser Brothers’ Christmas
    4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated version)
    5. A Charlie Brown Christmas TIED with Alvin & the Chipmunks Christmas

I was actually surprised they agreed on the first four right away, but on number five, they had different ideas. I also love how most of their picks are the same Christmas shows I watched when I was growing up. Very cool!

What are your favorite Christmas shows/movies from when you were a child? If you have kids, what are their favorites?

By the way, we’re exactly one week away from the “big day.” If you celebrate Christmas, are you ready? I’m getting there…

    Don’t Forget!

We’re still dishing about the holidays over at The Novel Girls. We’d love to see you, so come on over!
